Ceramic keycaps have become increasingly popular among mechanical keyboard enthusiasts for their premium feel, durability, and distinctive sound. But have you ever wondered how ceramic keycaps are made?


Unlike traditional ABS or PBT keycaps, ceramic keycaps go through a far more complex manufacturing process that involves precision molding, high-temperature firing, glazing, and careful hand assembly.


To give you a closer look behind the scenes, we visited our own ceramic keycap factory and followed the entire production journey from start to finish. We photographed every major step—from selecting raw materials and shaping each keycap to glazing, kiln firing, quality inspection, and final packaging—so you can see what it really takes to create a premium ceramic keycap.

How are ceramic keycaps made?

Why Choose Ceramic Keycaps?

For years, ABS and PBT have been the standard materials for mechanical keyboard keycaps thanks to their affordability and efficient production. Ceramic, however, offers a completely different experience. Compared with plastic keycaps, ceramic keycaps provide several unique advantages:

  • A smooth, jade-like texture with a premium feel

  • Excellent resistance to scratches, wear, and fading

  • Higher density for a deeper, more satisfying typing sound

  • A distinctive appearance that stands out on any desk setup

These qualities have made ceramic keycaps increasingly popular among keyboard enthusiasts. However, achieving this level of quality requires a manufacturing process that is significantly more complex than producing traditional plastic keycaps.

How Are Ceramic Keycaps Made?

1. Material Selection

The material formulation directly determines the finished keycap's hardness, strength, translucency, surface texture, and overall durability. Traditional ceramic materials are extremely hard but can also be brittle under concentrated impact. To improve both strength and reliability, premium ceramic keycaps often use customized ceramic formulations.

2. Pressing & Forming

After the ceramic powder is prepared, it is compressed under high pressure using precision molds to create the basic shape of each keycap. At this stage, maintaining consistent density and dimensions is critical, as it directly affects the quality of the later firing process.

3. Trimming & Refining

Each keycap undergoes careful trimming to remove imperfections and refine its shape. This process ensures:

  • Accurate dimensions

  • Smooth edges

  • Consistent keycap profiles

Because ceramic naturally shrinks during firing, precise dimensional control at this stage is essential for ensuring every keycap fits mechanical switches correctly.

4. High-Temperature Sintering

Sintering is one of the most important stages in the ceramic keycap manufacturing process.


The formed keycaps are placed inside a high-temperature kiln for hours, where temperatures typically reach 1140–1280°C. During this process, ceramic particles fuse together into a dense, durable structure. This transformation dramatically increases the keycap's hardness, strength, and wear resistance while creating the solid feel that ceramic keycaps are known for.

5. Glazing or Surface Coating

Glazing gives ceramic keycaps their signature appearance and silky-smooth touch.


A uniform layer of glaze is sprayed onto each keycap before it goes through another round of kiln firing. This process creates the glossy finish that feels smooth under the fingertips while also improving stain resistance and making the surface easier to clean.


However, not all ceramic keycaps are glazed. Some are finished with a protective surface coating instead of a glaze after firing. Both approaches protect the ceramic, but they offer different tactile experiences and surface finishes. Glazed keycaps tend to have a smoother, glossier feel, while coated or unglazed versions usually retain a more natural, matte texture.

6. Legend Processing & Secondary Firing

Once the surface is complete, legends are added to each keycap.


Different manufacturing techniques may be used depending on the design, but the goal remains the same: creating crisp, durable legends that resist fading over years of use. After the legends are applied, an additional firing process may be performed to permanently bond them with the ceramic surface, ensuring excellent long-term durability.

7. Precision Glue Application

The bottom structure is equally important because it determines compatibility with mechanical switches. Before the stem is installed, automated equipment precisely applies a controlled amount of adhesive to the center of each keycap, ensuring consistent positioning and reliable bonding.

8. Stem Installation

Although ceramic is extremely hard and wear-resistant, the stem experiences repeated impact every time a key is pressed. For this reason, many premium ceramic keycaps reinforce the stem using durable engineering plastics rather than ceramic alone.
